Meditation & Mysticism: Arvo Pärt After an extensive reexamination of early music forms such as chant, polyphony and plainsong, Arvo Pärt (b.1935) finally discovered his own unique compositional style called the "tintinnabuli" (ringing of bells) by the 1970s. This discovery gave birth to a fruitful era of compositions such as Fratres (1977), Cantus In Memoriam Benjamin Britten (1977) and Tabula Rasa (1977). The tintinnabuli style is reminiscent of ringing bells and uses very simple harmonies and patterns. Many music theorists are seduced by this apparently systematic construction of each piece and are quick to dissect and understand it. Some people call his music minimalist, but most people do not hear a kind of systematic rigidity that one might expect from such a formulaic approach to composition. In fact, most people are drawn to the meditative aspect of his music. There is something deeply moving in Pärt's music that you must experience live in concert. This program will feature his vocal compositions and organist Matthew Piel. Buy your tickets in advance online or call 206-973-7528 before June 13 and get seated in our reserved section. No need to show up early, just mention your name at will call and they'll lead you to the reserved section. We'll make sure there is ample room this time, as I know it was fairly packed last concert.
